Qing dynasty emperors used to rule China from this once-beautiful complex of palaces, lakes and gardens. However during the Second Opium War (in 1860) British and French troops looted and thoroughly burnt down most of it. Today visitors can still see ruins of the European-style palaces that better survived the burning because they were made out of stone.
